Deiseb a wrthodwyd Stop the Welsh Baccalaureate A-level form being compulsory in Welsh 6th form colleges
Made available from 2007, the welsh baccalaureate family of qualifications, whilst perfectly valid choices, have long been made compulsory to all 6th form students, much to the disappointment of learners and teachers alike. Based on the concept of teaching a wide range of transferable skills to students, the qualification has become a running joke among students, with the majority believing it is a waste of time and resources, inhibiting their learning process.
Rhagor o fanylion
Unlike England, Scotland, and northern Ireland, where 6th formers are allowed to choose 4 A-levels (or equivalent) by default, welsh students are encouraged to only choose 3 of their own, and take welsh bac. This requirement not only adds undue stress and frustration to students lives, it also removes the opportunity to choose a more relevant and useful qualification for their chosen career path. It doesn't take much thinking to see that an employer would choose an english student, who has 4 relevant A-levels, over a welsh student, who only has 3 relevant qualifications, and a 4th, mandatory A-level, considered to not only to be easy, but also irrelevant.
By continuing to make welsh baccalaureate compulsory, the welsh government is singlehandedly inhibiting the growth and prosperity of its students, both through limiting the qualifications they can obtain, and drawing attention away from those A-levels they actually want and need to achieve.
