Deiseb a wrthodwyd Rename the Irish Sea to 'Môr Cymru'
To start, this is not a territorial issue - we do not want to insist on every nation renaming this body of water, and we do not stake any claim it.
However, to our east there is an arm of the Atlantic Ocean which is referred to both as 'The English Channel' and 'La Manche'.
In this era of economic and sporting uncertainty, I petition for the Welsh Government to rename the Irish Sea as 'Môr Cymru' to raise Welsh spirit.
St George's Channel should be included in this rebranding.
Rhagor o fanylion
My Irish mother recently visited me, and pointed out with the ridiculousness of the Gulf of Mexico being renamed (with the billionaires at Google and Apple complying), an opportunity has arisen for Ireland to kindly extend a courtesy of renaming their Sea to the Welsh.
However, I would feel uncomfortable petitioning the Irish to do this, as I believe that Ireland have historically been asked enough of. However, I still believe that the Welsh would feel a boost of moral and pride in seeing our language extend to our nearest sea when referred to domestically as our own.
It goes without saying that St George's Channel should be renamed too. St George does not represent either nation that the channel connects. I encourage the Irish and Welsh Governments to collaborate to collectively rename that particular area.
I bring this petition to the Welsh Government's attention in the hope of international co-operation, to contrast to name-grabbing currently occurring within the USA.
